 At
Red Hill Pottery, John Anthony
makes wood fired functional stoneware for everyday use. These
pots are fired in a single chamber catenary arch cross-draft kiln.
Because the salt glazing process and the path of the flame greatly
influence the surface of the pots, position in the kiln has a
substantial effect on the final appearance of the pots. Each pot
is unique in form and surface, though they all share a common
palette and can be combined in sets. These pots are microwave,
oven, and dishwasher safe.
To
get to Red Hill Pottery take Rt. 29 to Springville, PA. At the
intersection in the center of town (by the Texaco station) go
west on SR 3004 about 1/4 mile to a stop sign. At the stop sign
bear left onto SR 3006, and go about 3.5 miles to a T, where you
will turn right onto SR 3011. Go about two tenths of a mile, and
see a green mailbox on the right (Box 294BB) and the (very steep)
driveway on the left. Go up the driveway past the cabin and park
in the field below the kiln shed.
On Monday this year I will be demonstrating how the kiln is loaded,
and discussing how decisions are made about positioning the work,
and what range of likely results can be expected. The demo will
start at noon and be ongoing til six p.m.
