Conner - Terra Incognita Clayworks
I named my studio "Terra Incognita" (a phrase meaning "unexplored
terrain") because it represents to me the limitless possibilities
that clay offers as a medium. As an artist, I am always striving to
explore new areas with my work, however subtle the changes are from
year to year. This year, some of the changes visitors will find at my
studio include several new glaze colors, new forms and surfaces, as
well as a new series of wall tiles I've been working on. I will also
have a good supply of the ever-popular wine goblets.
As
always, my work is strongly influenced by the patterns, colors, and
textures I find in the natural world. I try to incorporate these elements
into my stoneware forms, which include both functional pottery and decorative
tile and mosaic works. My hope is that my work will bring a touch of
warmth to your home and to your daily rituals of eating and drinking.
I
grew up in Susquehanna County, but I didn't really discover ceramics
until college while studying art education at Syracuse University. Since
graduating, I have enjoyed teaching high school art and have recently
completed a master's degree focusing on ancient Pueblo pottery traditions
of the American Southwest. Currently, I split my time between Northeast
PA and central NY, where I teach ceramics at a high school near Syracuse.
During the summer and often on weekends throughout the school year I
can be found working in my studio here in PA, which sits next to my
parents business, Tall Pines Farm Stoves & Fireplaces. The
business, located on what was once a working farm, now occupies many
of the original buildings on the property. Terra Incognita Clayworks
is the latest addition to the farm.
Directions:
The studio is located on Route 167 between Montrose and Brooklyn, PA.
From the SR 706/167 junction just east of Montrose, PA take SR 167 South
for 2.5 miles. Tall Pines Farm and Terra Incognita Clayworks are located
on the left. If you are coming from the South, take 167 north about
4 miles past Brooklyn, PA and you will find us on the right, just past
a large red barn and a cluster of, of course, tall pine trees.
I
am delighted to return to the Artist's Open House Weekend Tour this
year and look forward to welcoming visitors to my studio. On Monday
I will be demonstrating how I create my mosaics.
