Meg Conner - Terra Incognita Clayworks

The term "terra incognita" - which means "unexplored terrain" - represents for me the limitless possibilities that clay offers as a medium. I chose this as my studio name because my work is also strongly influenced by the endless variety of colors, patterns, and subtle textures I see in nature. I strive to explore these elements in my artwork, making forms that include both functional and decorative wares, as well as tile and mosaic works. Each piece is hand made, using either wheel-throwing or hand-building techniques, or a combination of both.

I discovered ceramics in college while studying art at Syracuse University. Since graduating, I have enjoyed teaching high school art for several years, but have always wanted to devote more time to my own artwork. In 2005, I returned to school to study the roots of my craft, and have recently completed a master's degree focusing on ancient Pueblo pottery traditions of the American Southwest.

I am a native of Susquehanna County, and have recently returned to this area to establish a ceramics studio on my family's farm. Located five miles southeast of Montrose, my studio sits next to my parents' business, Tall Pines Farm Stoves & Fireplaces. Though no longer a working farm, many of the original buildings on the property now house the family business. Terra Incognita Clayworks is the latest addition to the farm.

Directions: The studio is located on Route 167 between Montrose and Brooklyn, PA. From the SR 706 / 167 junction just east of Montrose, take 167 South for 2.5 miles. Tall Pines Farm and Terra Incognita Clayworks are located on the left. From the South, take 167 north about 4 miles past Brooklyn and you will find us on the right just past a large red barn.

I am delighted to be part of the Artist's Open House Weekend Tour this year and look forward to welcoming visitors to my studio. On Monday I will demonstrate trimming the foot of a vessel on the potter's wheel.
