Marc
Schimsky - Born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised on Long Island, Marc Schimsky
began painting and drawing at an early age. He learned how to make original hand-pulled
relief block prints in high school and in college he majored in education with
a focus on "intaglio" printmaking, painting and design. From 1969 to 1970, he
studied at the University of Siena, Italy, and attended classes in fresco painting
and sculpture at the Istituto Statale d'Arte di Duccio di Buoninsegna. In 1976,
Marc received a master's degree from Pratt Institute where he was awarded an assistantship
from Clare Romano-Ross, the innovator of the collograph process. Although
a master printmaker, Marc has been painting in oils and acrylics since 2005. His
paintings are generally figurative and reflect experiences he has encountered
while traveling or activities involving family and friends. He enjoys probing
the psychology of his subjects by capturing them mid-stream in a familiar activity.
Aspects of his subjects may be in sharp focus in one moment and then in an instant,
areas fade, move or disappear. In addition, Marc's paintings often feature an
explosion of texture and color that is very much driven by emotion. His vibrant
color palette and his brushwork are reminiscent of the Expressionists and the
San Francisco Bay Area Figurative Painters of the 1950s.
In
contrast to his figurative works, Marc loves the intuitive and improvisational
aspects of abstraction. He finds the challenge of creating an abstraction "liberating."
His mixed media abstractions and his solar-etched images are composed of layers
of engaging colors, textures, and objects. Many of these abstract arrangements
communicate his interest in memory, the passage of time, the ephemeral nature
of life, history and travel. Marc's mixed media abstractions are inspired by the
works of Robert Rauschenberg and Larry Rivers and other members of the Neo-Dadaist
movement of the 1950s and 60s.
