Marc
Schimsky's figurative paintings and mixed media abstractions
deal mainly with the ephemeral nature of life and the passage
of time. His representational works often involve capturing subjects
mid-stream in a familiar activity.
Marc is a great admirer of the works of the contemporary Spanish
painter, Manel Anoro. Anoro's Fauvist approach to color has profoundly
influenced the way Marc applies his own color scheme to the canvas.
Marc is also a devoted fan of the works of the San Francisco Bay
Area painter, Elmer Bischoff, whose sensual and authoritative
brushwork physically and beautifully integrates subject with composition.
In
deference to these two masters, Marc likes to work with an abundance
of vibrant color and he generally keeps the brushwork in his paintings
loose and expressive. Borrowing qualities found in photography,
Marc often blurs parts of his figures and frequently develops
a pattern of overlapping shapes to convey a sense of movement
and action in his work. This is often the focal point of many
of his paintings. Occasionally, his paintings portray people and
places in the Montrose area but Marc is also fond of using family
members and close friends as subjects.
In
contrast to his figurative works, Marc loves the intuitive and
improvisational aspects of abstraction. He finds the challenge
of creating an abstraction "liberating." His mixed media
abstractions are composed of layers of engaging colors, textures,
and flattened "found objects." Many of these abstract
arrangements communicate his preoccupation with time, history
and travel. Some are personal comments on the ironies of life.
In
July of 2007, Marc won "BEST-IN-SHOW" at the Roberson
Museum's 2007 Regional Juried Art Exhibition. Two of Marc's large
oil paintings - "Red Dress" and "Waiting For An
Answer" - were selected by juror, Philip Pearlstein, an internationally
acclaimed realist painter, for the top prize.
