Springville
Schoolhouse Art Studios is the home of the former Springville
School. It is being imaginatively renovated by painter James Penedos
and sculptor Charles Welles as live/work studios for artists. The
brick school was built in 1925, and served the Springville community
as its high school until 1956. The classrooms are being re-adapted
into six live/work studios for rent on a long-or short-term basis.
Units are now available for rent.
There
are additional areas for a woodworking shop, plaster-casting facility,
stone-carving area, photo darkroom and bronze casting area. The
wide hallways are used as a gallery for exhibits.
James Penedos resides in Hopbottom, and is an oil painter. He formerly
operated galleries in Colorado and Montrose, and often works in
an abstract expressionist style.
Charles Welles is a sculptor, who primarily carves marble. On occasion,
he also carves wood and works in bronze. He has been carving for
approximately twenty years. His work includes figurative, abstract
and conceptual work.
Springville
is located on Route 29 midway between Montrose and Tunkhannock (12
miles from each). Going north from Tunkhannock, turn right in the
center of Springville (Lee's Antiques), go one block and turn right
again. The Schoolhouse is in the second block on the left. Phone
