The
Springville Schoolhouse Art Studios is a former high school building
being imaginatively renovated by painter James Penedos and sculptor Charles Welles
as live/work studios for visual artists. It is located in Springville, which is
a small rural village in the rolling farm hills on Route 29 halfway between Montrose
and Tunkhannock. The Schoolhouse was built in 1924 and served as the high school
for Springville and environs until its closing in 1956. The historic brick building
was acquired in 1999 for development as an art center and to provide live/work
studios for artists, as well as exhibit space and additional work areas.
James
Penedos resides in Hopbottom, and is an oil painter. He formerly operated galleries
in Colorado and Montrose, and often works in an abstract expressionist style.
Charles
Welles is a sculptor, who primarily carves marble. He has been carving for approximately
twenty-five years. His work includes figurative, abstract and conceptual work.
