Rodrica Tilley - Lanscape Painter;
Mystery is also a major component of my Tangled Garden Series of
intricate and free, close-ups of plants & blooms. This series has
been vining its way around my studio for more than two decades.
Some paintings are large. Some are tiny. Some are started and completed
in the studio. Some are plein air works. My love for all things
horticultural is celebrated in these colorful paintings.
Evening
Chores is one of a series of nocturnes I've been painting over the
last seven years, since I made the first one of a rock formation
at Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu, NM in 2000. I have always enjoyed the wee
hours of the dawn and waning daylight of the evening. I've carefully
observed the way colors and shadows change as dark is arriving or
leaving the sky and land. In creating these nocturnes, I let my
imagination influence my color choices. Subject matter is often
rural or garden in nature. In this painting I like the graphic patterns
of the warm barn windows against cool night hills and sky, and the
mystery within.
I adore and treasure our vanishing Susquehanna County rural
architecture and have been painting our barns, outbuildings, farmhouses
and the occasional cow for thirty years. It's the least I can do
to preserve a part of our agricultural heritage.
And you may see a surprise or two when you visit my secluded studio;
these days I paint whatever I want. I am lucky to be able to rise
in the morning, head out in my traveling studio/Prius and set up
my easel along the way somewhere…maybe in your back 40. It's a tough
job, but somebody has to do it. (big grin)
My
full color magazine illustrations have appeared in national magazines
including Woman's Day and Horticulture. My work is used by publishers
to illustrate articles on specific plants or gardening technique.
You may find the process interesting and you will be able to see
sketches, the original and the printed piece.
I
have been a professional artist for 39 years since leaving Moore
College of Art in Philadelphia. My work has been seen in nine
one-woman gallery shows and numerous group and museum exhibits.
It is held widely in corporate and private collections. Two of
my large pastel paintings received First Place Painting Prizes
in the regional juried Images of Susquehanna County Exhibit in
'04 & '06. I was invited for the three years to participate in
the NYC Central Park Paint Out as an invited signature member
of the National Academy of Professional Plein Air Painters. In
2004 I was the first Artist in Residence at Salt Springs State
Park. My pastel plein air paintings have been chosen twice by
the Pennsylvania Environmental Council to be presented as as award
for lifetime achievement. I achieved signature status in Pennsylvania
En Plein Air Society this year and was featured artist in May
with International Plein Air Painters.
On Monday, I will be painting something from life, depending
on the weather, in or in front of my studio. I look forward to
your visit. I have scheduled a watercolor demo at eleven and a
pastel paintng demo for two pm.
